found this fix to restore fps to cs 1.5 levels, the problem of low fps in cs 1.6 is Valve using an old opengl driver.
- Go to the Windows\System32 directory and look for your opengl.dll
If you're using a nvidia card the nvoglnt.dll is the right one.
For Ati cards it's the atioglxx.dll.
And for the rest the opengl32.dll.
- copy that file to your ..\SteamApps\user@user.de\counter-strike\gldrv directory.
- open the drvmap.txt in that directory and change the text to the following:
Default Default
gldrv/YOURFILENAME.dll OpenGL Driver

omg! what a difference! i went on and played on some random french server and it was sooo smooth... got 24-5 easilly lol

you sure this is not hax? by the very definition your changing the graphics files to perform outside the original standards made by the programers in an effort to alter performance, which is technically the same as changing to a wallhack type file instead, your just changing to one to give you extra FPS....

no seriously
overclocking ur cpu/graphics card means your computer can run better as well as your games but if your computer is already reaching the maximum limit of the games original code then it wont make a difference, and if your FPS does increase that is because you are still within the original settings of the game code.
detonator drivers are the same, its making your hardware run better but the ony way you would see and increase is if you were still within the game codes limits.
however changing the file the game code uses to get better performance is imo hax, same as changing interp in config or using a different dll that gives you wallhack etc in this case you give yourself higher FPS than gamesettings permit by the original code and thus a hacked advantage over other oponents - same as wallhack.
agreed its no where near as bad as wallhack and you would have to be decent players for it to make any difference, however it is still technically a hack and your also decent players so it would make that small and unfair difference - one which demon even commented on.

If Valve wanted it updated they would do it by sending the files via steam - thats what the thing is designed for.
Lastly those comments reak of the kind of attitude and remarks made by haxors who dont think they are doing anything wrong and its right to do stuff like that. Maybe your right but i wouldnt risk it and im not going to be doing it myself.

OMG Demon!! I HAX!! I need to be banned... 
I changed the config.cfg file that Valve created for the player to use in the way they originally intended, in order to bind my keys differently to how they were when the game was brought out!

again you can change bind keys in theg ames - thats within the game code's limits. but swaping a normally unchangable file to a non valve one i just out of the question.
you find it funny - i thik you idiots for doing it so willingly and then laughting.

oh dear... im a haxor cos i updated a STANDARD file to the latest version in order for openGL to run at its INTENDED speed which EVERY OTHER APPLICATION IN WINDOWS uses...
I must b a hax...
I have never used a hack in my life and am more anti cheat that probably anyone you'll every meet, and thats about all I have to say about that...

the main differance here is that the opengl.dll file was not written by valve.
They referance it, If im correct if you delete the opengl.dll file HL will default to the default opengl.dll file that is in the system32 dir.
THUS, because the file is APi, not valve written software updating this file (like updating DirectX) should not be classed as a hax. If anything is mans that Valve hve not updated there openGL driver from the orignal HL, because they have seen no need for it because they are working more on HL2.
Yes I can see how this "could" be misentrpted as a hax, because on of the orinal game files have been changed (and the servers that may check this fil may not know it's a simplely updated driver), but for the result that has been gotten from it then no, it is not a hack.
p.s
You can get the old GLQuake to work by also removing the openGL.dll file from teh quake dir, and thu removing the 3DFX only opengl driver that the game defaults to.

and all i got from you guys was flames which is why i explained my concerns. due to the way ross explained it i've got no problem with it and i can forget about it.
p.s
any idea if valve are ever going to update this via steam or wether i should just go ahead and do this?

i did it and it made my game lagg, but then i did the windows g/card turn of v/sync in OpenGL settings and i got my 100 fps back and my games improving again  So i dunno if i did anything wrong but im sure i didnt ?will the Gama fix work for everyone ? and if it should then why didnt it work for me and wot did i get wrong lol ?

right click on your desktop, click settings/advanced/geforce ***/openGL settings
then set vertical sync to "always off"...
make sure you update to the latest detonator drivers from www.nvidia.com as they always tweak that bit of extra performance out with almost every release...

wow! what a diffrens now I get 100 fps on the menu and 50 - 70 when im playing XD..but still 10-20 fps when im in smoke..and it dont help when I turn down the smoke either...btw what does the v-sync do actualy?
