hey gouldie and anyone else with an interst in mapporing
i was at a lose end the monday night, so with nothing better to do i started mapping my office, kind of got the bug back a little, but without broadband i am seriously struggling to remember all the changes that the new sdk has put in against the old,
so if you dont mindf helping us out old boy, i may have to post some questions on here as time goes on so that you can answer them for me, i am blocked at work from looking at "games" related websites.
i found an old copy of your courtyard and have familiarised myself with how you do things, and you never forget the old ways of making walls etc,
so i am taking to map my office, i have completed a rough layout of the floor plan and the interlocking walls etc, these will all be consistent when i copy and paste up the next level, i have put in lights, i am a bit worried though as it being an office nad there being lots of windows how the light box etc will impact it, i am basically looking at one big cube around the map once complete? will that stuff up the fps?
its going to be a fy_ map, not going to have hostages or VIP or bomb targets, just a good old fashioned shoot em up, unless i change my mind and can come up with a reason to bomb where i work!

It's great fun when the mapping bug gets you :)
sky box's and stuff. right you can do alot of cheating with "sky box's" and windows. as in you don't need to put a big box around the whole thing.
______

#
______
The # is your room / map and the lines are your sky box.
This way will effect your fps a bit. But it also depends on how well Vis cuts your map up.
the other way of doing it is:
[@@@
[#
[#
[#
[#
[@
@
Where sky box is [, walls are @ and the window is #.
(side on view).
PS is it 1.6 mapping or CS:S mapping.

css, i dont have the old skool build and nowhere to download it from, so just doing source
i kind of get what you mean, but there are going to be areas ewhere you can see form one window to another, so i guess for those i will have to box it off,

Oh and when you come over to the lan I will be abelt o give you all the old tools if you want.

When you finally get online (or the Lan party which ever comes first) I will go over some of the tricks I have learnt with source mapping.

I wish I was a pro, I still can't do small details. but I hvae leaned alot about displacement mapping. and giving bots an easer time of traveling.

yeah i have seen some of your wall joinings! but dont worry i was playing HL2 last night, and my god the amount of mapping errors in that map, things not joining on to walls, details being sunk into the floor, and when they have made a couple of things you can see how they have just mapped straight through other blocks to make it look right, biggest bunch of cheats i have seen in ages,
for me i need to find models for tables and chairs and office things like that, i could build it all with block but i think it would come out rather messy!

when you know what your looking for is so easy to spot these things!
I've gotten a bit better. the biggest issue I always have is that I'm always changing what grid size i'm working on.

yeah, i am working on a standard wall and floor thickness at the minute, but i am not very good on having standard room sizes,
oh and i meant to ask, on the floor, cieling wall front, do you extend the floor and cieling under the walls or do you extend the walls to cover the floor and ceiling, i think i use the floor and ceiling to cover over the cracks in mine.
also do you do one room at a time and fill it full of detail, or do you do a braod plan and then fill in certain areas as you go?

I normally work boradly untill stuff starts to come together. some times it works other times not so well.
as for the second question Im not 100% if I get you.
This is what I think you are on about:
====
@
@
====
@===
@
@
@===
if so then I have no standard way, it all comes down on the textures I use and if they are split up.
