One of the machines in the flat is sending too much traffic (over size packets we think), it's still doing it after rebuilding the computer and changing the network card.  oh and norton say's no virus's and no spay ware :( . we are having very very little luck with this.

It could be that cheap peice of sh*t router (or is it a switch) that you got. Try using a different port on the hub/switch/router, and check that the network cable aint buggered. If not, get yourself a packet sniffer and find out exactly whats going on with the packets (remember the old comp comms we did at uni, that will come in handy now!!!).

Also, you could have a virus on one of the other machines on the network too. Its def a weird one tho!!

use drtcp.exe to check and set your packet size optimum setting is 1430 for mtu in place of the defualt 1500. sending larger packets than 1500 causes fragmentation. This could be the cause of your network problems especially if you use a hardware router i had the same problem and changing this setting improved network performance.
