cudnt be arsed readin all that...but games aint gettin easier its just kids are more used to them and have been brought up playing harder games makin us better from an early age.

one of the first decent hard games i pld was smash tv on snes..... only thing that has come close to that level of difficulty is cod on hardest settin and even then i aint completed smash tv where i can walk thro cod now i done it so many times.

now wif multiplayer bein the way forward. gamers reflexes and general gamin ability will grow to keep up wif better players, where in games it stays at a certain level as the comp only gets so hard, games aint gettin easier our generation is just gettin better at games...

plus most of games we get here are pretty easy.... go get some jap games... they button bashing madness not easy at all!

well i found HL2 rather easy in the end, and on the bits where it was hard i just re did it until i suceeded, which was the point the article was making, (had you bothered to read the article)

basically that multiple save points and no penalty for failing makes it much easier to get through large levels and difficult games, the game may still be hard, but you dont have to really think before you act, you just act, if it doesnt work you try another way, and again until you find the best way of doing it with the least damage

also that online guides and too many prompts in games make the thought process less demanding, you dont problem solve, just follow the only route open to you. its too linear.

personally i think games are not much easier, but completing them takes less effort.

I remeber some of the games on the amiga 5 lifes and if you made a mistake it was 20mins worth of work again.

But I think these days there are much better testers then there where years ago, so games have been made more balanced in a way. generally I found most games to be too easy or almost to hard, it was dificult to find games that were medium.

It also doesn't help that the styles of games have changed alot as well.

First off, you got to know what kind of game you are talking about. For example, there is nothing easy about multiplayer Dawn of War…or any multiplayer game. Single player games are playable, and with such a large number of games out there, if I had to go back and play the same bit an hour at a time for each time I made a mistake, well, that games going out the window and I wont be buying the next one. Most game developers and publishers don't want this. As for pack man (or Puck Man), I’m sure it was never ending, not seemingly. The point on playing was to be top of the high score board.
Games have to be fun and challenging, intuitive and innovative with a good reward (higher risk = higher reward); something that’s harder and harder to do with each new evolution of the game...but I then again, I might not know what I'm talking about.

IGI was actually v. cool – I had the first one, but the thing that did annoy me about it was the never ending spawning of baddies, no matter how many you killed. It was a good game though... I particularly liked the level where you had to provide sniper overwatch of an area.

I don't think that games as an overall genre have neccessarily become easier, but the industry is now run and influenced in a completely different way than it used to be, which may skew players memories and perspectives. (I haven't bothered to read either of those articles by the way). I used to have games on the Amiga and the Spectrum that were ridiculously hard, to the point where I'd never bother playing them, let alone completing them. Does anyone else remember Project X - the horizontal shooting game in space by Team 17? The game had NO cheats, and was IMPOSSIBLE. Well, it was for me anyway!

Most good games need to run a fine line between challenging and just plain frustrating. I may throw down the controller in disgust after losing another mission / fight / race or whatever, but if the game has been tuned right, I'll pick it right back up again and have another go until it's 4AM and I've gone to sleep on the sofa. D'oh. This is a particularly important factor for Arcade developers, because they're looking to make people keep spending and spending in one go. Because games are less of a big deal nowadays (Every other person can play them at home) I suspect that Arcade games have become somewhat easier or at least more accomodating for players, in order to keep them coming back for more. Arcade games could afford to be a lot harder when they first appeared, because you kept playing as there was nowhere else to go..

I could bang on about save-positions, which definately make games easier; modern control systems, which have also helped to make games simpler; and a whole variety of other factors that influence the relative ease of games, but the truth is that gaming is still quite a young industry, and it's not so much a case of games getting easier, but the audience widening and becoming more accomodated by game developers. It's a bit like saying that films today aren't as good as they were thirty years ago - nonsense - there were plenty of crap films back then too, there's just more of them now because the audience is bigger.

'Nuff said.
