Everywhere I go I keep hearing about 'Final Fantasy this' and 'Final Fantasy that'. It seems to be a big deal, though I have no clue what it is, other than looking distinctly Japanese and turn based, which I hate. But perhaps I have it wrong. Can someone explain to me succinctly and concisely what these games are all about and why I should care?

well it defenitly has the japanes look about it. And maybe the early games where turnbased, but the more recent ive played (like FF XII) was real time, but with a pause button if u wanted (like in Dragon Age, if u played that).
The story in these games are just amazing and suck u right in. Aside from the main-storie quest line, there hundreds of other small quest-lines, making for a very long play time.
And well the cutscenes, of which there are quite a few, look rlly rlly amazing ( even tho i played on the old PS2, they still looked very real).
they're nice games, u should try one

*stares*
Final fantasy CREATED the rpg genre.
Or, well, specifically, it was one of the few titles that helped to build up the market for it.
Basically, number 1/2 had mostly turn based fights and little plot.
3-9 retained turn based, but developed excellent plots and experiences with minigames and all sorts. Plus, i do believe several of them have multiple endings.
10, 10-1 and 10-2 (i think thats correct..) were all less turn based, though somewhat still that way, and the plot got a bit soppy for my liking :P
11 was a online mmorpg. Its had immense problems here and there, because of lack of players etc, and it used to have issues with grinding. Not played it myself.
12 Was realtime combat.
13 is the upcoming new one, 14 is the new online MMORPG version.
I used to hate turn based, but the story and experience of final fantasy overpower the combat. Plus, the exploration of the map is ENTIRELY real time with your ability to go anywhere you want to go to, in most of them. You dont -have- to immediately go to location X.
Random battles are however, annoying.
