I know Valve never wanted to release HL2 on CD anyway, but had to because of their contract with Sierra, but did they have to make it all so f**king hard to play anyway?
I finally got around to buying HL2 the other day, went to install it today, and got Installation Errors on CD4 because an .ico file was missing, wherupon the installer abruptly quit out. This happened a couple of times, before I realised it might be because I'd selected HL2 only, not CS as well. Indeed that was the case, and having done a search on the internet I find that hundreds of people have had this same problem... also having to install the 1gig CS game to get HL2 to work. Aaaaaaaaaggghh... but the plot thickens...
Having finally got the f**ker installed I started having to go through the god-awful 'Steam' process just to play the bloody game (remember, I only want to play the Single-Player version anyway). I finally get to the bit where I can 'Register a product I already own...' and I find that my bloody CD-Key is already in use!! Some bastard has somehow registered it before!! And to top it off, if I want to reset my key, or get a new one, I have to send $10 and the original CD to some address in the U.S., which then takes 4-6 weeks to sort!!
This whole process has turned me completely sour to Valve and their f**king 'Steam' system - aren't people allowed to play single-player games without internet connections anymore? And if some f**ker steals my CD key, why can't I reset it remotely over the internet - I mean, if I have it ligitimately, I should be the only one who could reset it anyway, so what should it matter?! I couldn't be bothered with the whole postal reset system they have, even if I lived in America, let alone the Middle East, which just makes it all the harder to sort it out. It's enough to make me want to bomb their damn stupid selfish yankee f**king cities...
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I'm really quite pissed off!
f**king stupid Valve f**kers. Anyone know where I can download the pirate version?! In the meantime I sit here waiting for the Demo to download - woopee-f**king-doo. I almost wish for the game to be crap now, but the worst part of all of this is that I know it won't be.
DAMMIT!

S'not the point tho really... some other bastard is using my key! - One of the few games that i would always have bought full price and this happens - the irony! I fear that this 'Steam' thing may be the way that future software is going - games and applications.
And now I've played the HL2 demo levels which are goddam awesome and run most excellently on my work computer - Dammit! I'm going to email Valve tomorrow. Anyone know how long it took before they reset the CD Key for Warlock?

i ahd a problem with Star Wars galaxy where they produced batches with the smae CD Keys, after returning one copy to amazon where i bought it, i contacted swg and emailed them photos of my recipt, case and cd key, they then confirmed and emailed me a new key which i could use, took about 2 days from contacting them to sort it out,
valve should be able to do them same really, if it is a legit copy.

I don't have the receipt any more... threw it away. I bought the game a couple of months ago when I read they were going to start pulling it off shelves after Valve and Sierra settled their issues. I emailed Valve this morning with a couple of photos of the box and CD's and the CD-Key and a luke-warm email - now I'll have to wait and see. Bloody annoying really.
On the bright side I now have two days holiday, as the King of Saudi Arabia died this morning.

hamble - is it possible that the person that has stolen your steam id is you? if the install only failed after youd registered ur key then that might explain why you ccant add it. Try just installing steam andf then logging in - see if you can dl it?

I think I see what you're getting at, but no, I only registered the key after I had got everything to install properly (including Steam, which had also updated itself). If only it were that simple! I've now played the demo level three times to the end - impressively large demo, and am way impressed - particularly as I didn't even use the Gravity Gun the first time around as I didn't realise how it worked! D'oh! It's the most awesome weapon of all!
I'm now contemplating buying the game again just to get it to work. Still not really the point though - dammit!

Well I bit the bullet and bought the Silver Edition online at Steam in the end... all works perfectly now. Should've just done that in the first place I suppose, but still pisses me off.
Anyway, so far the game rocks although is surprisingly easy (easier than HL1 – AI doesn't seem as sharp, perhaps it's trying to be too clever?)
The good thing is that I also get HL1: Source, so that should be cool.
Also I never heard anything from Steam after emailing them, but if they ever do come back to me, I may suddenly find myself with a valid CD-Key for another registration. Anyone want it?

HL1 source is cool, but has some nasty visual bugs in it.
But they did make one section amzing, the bit when you are on the side of the cliff, they complely replaced the sky box so it look great.

Well they did it... now I have a new CD-Key that will work fine. Damn my impatience! Still, nice to have a backup – I think I'll keep it though, as Richie suggested. Haven't tried HL1: Source yet, maybe later tonight.
And Harv... why are you being prevented from getting HL2?
Oh, and I got CS: Source to work last night too and found a few reasonably fast servers in Saudi to play on! I also found a Server in Qatar and played for a good ten minutes before realising that half the players were Bots! Damn, Bots got a lot better than the last time I played them!

I'm not.
Since i bought HL2 bronze, Valve are not letting me purchase HL:S in any way, shape or form as an upgrade.
In order to get HL:S i would have to buy ANOTHER copy of HL2.
f**kers.

Jesus, I've just played HL1: Source and that puppy is FAST! InsANELY FAST! STUPIDLY FAST. I played the cliff side bit Gould, and you're right, it's much cooler now. Didn't play much more than that, apart from the first encounter with the marines, which went, well, FAST.
Only GFX glitch is something I've also found in HL2 – You can't see the surface of the water until you're either right on it or under it, otherwise it looks like dry land - anyone else had this problem or know how to fix it?
Played a bit of CS: Source too again – the maps are now so pretty they seem like completely different maps. Took me about ten minutes to realise I was playing cs_assault!
