Lads,
I have a brand spanking new computer that works (resonably) well and i am constantly tweaking it to make things work better.
However, i am having trouble whenever i play any multiplayer steam game.
I can enter the server, and after a random amount of time, the game just hangs (as though it has lost connection) and i have to retry the connection.
It retries instantly, but the same soon happens again
Any suggestions lads?

check your gfx drivers 1st and foremost... dont use the 72.xx nvidia - go back to the 6x.xx ones... i did that recently...

actually - if its only multiplayer - have u tried single player?
if thats the case it could be your network card drivers or similar?

Well yeah.
I thought that you (could) be right anyway, so i rolled back to older drivers and not only did it have no effect, but HL2 told me to update the drivers since they were out of date.
:/
I'll try the network card drivers i guess.

newer drivers were a big issue for me too.

Well, i have gone back to the newer drivers again, and also changed the drivers for my network card as you suggested D.
Tried again, and it still has problems.
Occasionally, steam locks up after i double-click a server too. Then when it eventually goes in, it hangs before timing out when connecting to the server too.
:(

Through pure skill and knowledge of PC's on my behalf (BO!!) i duduced it was an IRQ problem.
Both my Netgear wireless card and my Nvidia graphics card share the same IRQ of 18.
In the process of sorting it out...

Hmm.
Not that easy. It doesn't seem to matter what i do, the MB insists on using 18 for both when i have at least 4 free between 3 and 15.
Grrr.

Not like the good old days of 3.11 etc when you were more likely to have to decide them yourself anyway

I swapped the wireless card in to a different PCI slot, and that has resolved the conflict problem.
It is now much better than before, in that i can spend 3 mins on a server rather than 3 seconds before it f**ks up.

Then what happens exactly?
Is this still with any steam game or just source or just hl1?

When i play single player HL2, the game freezes every 30secs - 3 mins for a fraction of a second.
When i try to connect to any server for any game, sometimes it reports it can not get on to the server at all and gives a latency of 2000 or 'not responding'. other times i can get on to the same server, but after about 3 minutes (never any more tbh) it lags as though someone has completely ripped out my internet access.
As soon as i come out of the game, it appears to go back to normal (and there is no indication that i ever lost internet activity either).

hmmm.
you got any usb plugged in? just the freezing every 30sec - 3mins sounds like a problem i had with a joystick when i used it on usb. probably not related though.
have you tried using wired ethernet not wireless?

I don't want to use wired as it would mean trailing a cable through the entire house, however it would probably be a good idea to make sure for definate that it is the wireless card causeing the problems.
Don't have time to do that now since i am off to work now, but to be sure i will be trying that sometime over the weekend.
I have no doubts it is still conflicts between the wireless card and the graphics card causeing the problems now.
...I have just finished playing CoD after playing for a couple of hours, and all the way through the internet connection just kept dropping.
I do have a USB joystick plugged in, but as you say i doubt it is that. I will test that too at some point to make sure anyway.
Cheers for the heads up Greg. I'll keep you posted with results over the weekend.

I disabled my wireless card and used internet over ethernet instead.
Works fine.
Now that i've identified where the problem is, any other ideas lads since i really need to use wireless instead of wired.

Have you tried fully uninstalling it in Windows then reinstalling it with latest drivers?
