With the coming of the new 40K rules at the end of this week I think, I thought I'd find out how many of you are into Games Workshop games? Ive been playing them on and off for about 10 years or so. My favs (in no particular order) are 40k, Warhammer, Blood Bowl and Necromunda. Not really that keen on the new LOTR game but not really tried it... any thoughts anyone else?

best thing ever - sending haumagaunts in as cannon fodder (cus they cost faff all points and arnt really that potent, just fast) and send in the stealers behind, the gaunts might have taken 1 or 2 marines out b4 the squad was destroyed (if your lucky) but by then its to late the stealers are ripping into them, i still remember the cries of my opponent when i did this tactic on his terminators

im not a fan of d&d but Uplink is... GW games arent board games tho, you play them completely freely on an open table and so arent constrained in any way except for the scenery you choose to use. The thing is though its not just about the gaming, its also abou tthe other parts of the hobby like painting and modelling which can all be very relaxing and enjoyable...
BTW jag theyve changed the rules again but i hated the previous ones cos they allowed a unit to shoot any nid unit they liked - now if they wanna do that they need to take a leadership test...

ah thats good, i think when i used that taccie it was with the older rules, when they changed it, altho i didnt play them, i heard all gaunts were limited to 12" and any could b targeted. I'd like to see a maring or gaurd pass a leadership test with a hive tyrant and a bunch of stealers bearing down at them tho.

ya but 1 small toffee hammer and a whole nid , orc , sas , spanish armarda and the hounds of hell armies would all be smashed by a small child if the need took the said youth ........ i can c its relaxing painting the models and maybe in a raincoaty way even sticking green foam onto twigs for trees might be concieved by some to be worthy of time spent on late wet evenings but i just cant get used to the idea of lining them all up and making swooshy sword or bang bang noises for guns n flicking a orc down whilst talking too yourself about the forth coming anhilation of the "table top" foe. Its just plane .......
WEIRD.......

i wouldnt agree with that neseccarily greg. It could be to an extent but generally speaking most armies cost about the same amount to purchase and the way the game is balanced you are only allowed to spend a certain number of points on each type of thing (troops, artillery, special characters, etc) and both opponents get the same number of points, so in theory if you both have the same number of points to spend you should have an equal chance of winning.
Alot of it also comes down to tactics. I hadnt played 40k in about a year and played against alistair (uplink) in a small 400 pt game (takes about 40 mins) and he had WAY better stuff than me, I basically had all basic troops (that was all he had in the house for me to borrow) but he had a tank thing and some v powerful characters but I managed to overwhelm him by pure strength of numbers... ie the more dice you roll, the better your chances are of doing some damage! Amusingly, the entire game came down to a sequence of two dice rolls whereI needed a 3+ followed by a 4+ and managed to get it, it was very amusing as i had expected to get hammered...

it was tactics that had led to me managing to increase my odds to it coming down to a final battle between my remaining few troops and his tank as i recall... i was just trying to highlight how sometimes a game can become very exciting when important objectives are down to a gut wrenching roll of the dice...

the role of the dice decide the outcome and what the chances would be in a real situation of X happening. It's a bit like the US army, sure they have lots of nice fancy trucks but they still get blown up by the odd iraqi RPG. In 40K the fun for some is in the modelling, others in the anticipation of getting that lucky dice role, but the thing to remember is you gotta have the tactics in place to be able to get into a posision to role any dice at all, and even on a bad day on the dice the better tactics can mean you end up being the victor (think of the US again, shoot loads, miss almost as much but they get an iraqi every now and then)
the other thing is remember, the guys on here that seem to have played it (me, alex, al, goudy) are 20+ so this was still when it was low speed net, low spec comps and in some respects the lack of computers (and multiplayer) all together were still factors so to play with other people it was just as easy to do this, now with broadband, super comps and more and more ppl owning computers multiplayer gaming is much better and easier so the need to play games like 40k is decreased - so in a way we are old school gamers/multiplayers
p.s - iraqi US is only for example purposes, I do not mean anything by these examples, so Mr Bust pls dont send a 10,000pt army against me and my 1pt air rifle.

hear what you're saying and agree with the bit about it being multiplayer gaming without a computer
guess its each to their own isnt it really.
